From the outside, this two-storey whitewashed seaside house looks as if it could perhaps have been modernised, but certainly as if it has been in situ for a century or two. The style is strictly Manx vernacular, the roof slated, windows and chimneys are symmetrically placed, a central porch stands against the wind and veronica hedging and a natural stone wall surround the plot. The Traditional look – essential to get planning
permission in an area of high scenic significance – is purely illusory,
as you discover as soon as you step through the door. There may have been
no scope for movement on the external appearance of the house, but its
traditionally-styled shell conceals a completely modern and highly idiosyncratic
interior, designed precisely to suit the tastes and lifestyle of the young
couple who have built it. |
